System of Millet Intensification (SMI) – Farmers from Nuapada Felicitated by Member of Parliament

A Seed Diversity Festival was conducted on 7th December 2017 by Ahinsa club partnering with WOFRI, MINI, Desi Bihan Suraksha Manch at Kharamal village of Bargarh District of Odisha. As many as 160 varieties of Paddy seeds, 20 varieties of Finger Millet and vegetable seeds were on display in different stalls at the seed fair.

Event was buzzing with cultural activities; nearly 500 women revolve around the village with holy water in their head. The festival was all about presentation of rich heritage of traditional seed diversity.

The festival was inaugurated with formal introduction about the importance of seed diversity and, their role in agriculture by Sri Prabhat Singh, Member of Parliament, BJD, Government of Odisha. He spoke about importance of millets and protective irrigation in the rainfed areas. He also mentioned the need for having a climate resilient strategy for the rainfed regions of Odisha especially bargarh district.

Two farmers who adopted System of Millet Intensification (Mr. Nepura Dharua & Mr. Karansing Bhoi, Komana Block Nuapada) were also felicitated by Sri Prabhat Singh.

Other attendees include Padamshree Sri Haldar Nag, MP Sri Prabhat Singh, Zilla Parishad Chairmen Sri Mukta Sahoo, Freedom Fighter Sri Lingraj Pradhan, Sri Jacob Nellithanam, Riccharia Campaign Dinesh Balam WASSAN and Local block Chairman Sri Altaf Muhammad.

Padamshree Sri Haldar Nag argued regarding the linguistic and cultural diversity along with role of farmers in conservation of local and traditional varietal crops.

Dinesh Balam, WASSAN talked about the Millet Mission programme of Odisha government and how traditional seed can conserve efficiently and scientifically. At last Pavitra Bhoi thanked all for participating in Seed festival.

Different activities were taken along with the seed diversity presentation i.e. cultural programme, stage programme, Homa, village visit and several recipes of different items.
