Western Himalaya Vikalp Sangam

The Western Himalaya Vikalp Sangam is a process to bring together people working on or interested in alternatives, ideologically and in practice in Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Aims of the Western Himalaya Vikalp Sangam
  • Advocating for meaningful alternatives with a vision through positive analysis and criticism
  • Evolving an inclusive and intersectional perspective through cross learning
  • Sharing of experiences and helping in alliances of people/organizations working on similar issues
  • Building a collective alternative vision for our communities and societies in years to come
Western Himalaya Mini-Vikalp Sangam (2016)

The very first gathering of organisations and individuals from the Western Himalayan region came together in August 2016.

The Sangam was organised by Sambhaavnaa, Jagori, Deer Park, and Kalpavriksh, and hosted 25 participants from 10 organisations across the region.

Western Himalayan Vikalp Sangam (2018)

The second gathering of organisations and individuals from the Western Himalayan region came together in November 2018.

The second in the series of the Western Himalayan Sangams, this Sangam was co-hosted by Jagori Rural, People’s Science Institute, Snow Leopard Conservancy-India Trust, Ladakh Arts and Media Organisation (LAMO), Sambhaavnaa, MOOL Sustainability & Research Centre, Titli Trust, Maati Collective, SADED, School for Rural Development and Environment, and Kalpavriksh.

The Sangam brought together a gathering of activitists, researchers and practitioners who have been working on rural livelihoods, waste management, conservation of wildlife, community-based tourism, local power generation,  organic/biodiverse farming, education/awareness, resistance, pastoralist livelihoods, and arts/media.

Western Himalaya Vikalp Sangam (2021)

The third Western Himalaya Vikalp Sangam was organised from 21st to 24th October 2021 at Devalsari in Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand.

The Sangam was co-hosted by Kalpavriksh, Titli Trust, Snow Leopard Conservancy India Trust, Sambhaavna Institute, School of Rural Development and Environment, South Asian Dialogue on Ecological Democracy, People’s Science Institute, Ladakh Arts and Media Organisation, Mool Sustainability Research and Training Center, Jagori Grameen, Beej Bachao Andolan, IABT Foundation, The Himalaya Collective, and Maati Sangathan.

The Sangam brought together social activists, environmentalists, researchers, and practitioners from Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. The participants included people working on social movements, agrarian issues, sustainable rural livelihoods, environmental conservation, community-based tourism, youth issues, and education.

In Hindi – लोक मांग पत्र – उत्तराखंड विधानसभा चुनाव २०२२. उत्तराखंड विधानसभा चुनाव १४ फरवरी 2022 को होना है. ऐसे में, राजनैतिक दलों से और खासकर दाल जो अंततः चुनाव जीत कर सरकार बनाता है उससे लोगों की क्या अपेक्षाएँ हैं, क्या मांगें हैं? नागर समाज इन मांगों को समय-समय पर उठता रहा है, और अब जब राज्य के चुनाव दरवाज़े पर हैं, यह जरूरी हो जाता है हम उन सवालों व चिंताओं को फिर से रेखांकित करते हुए, राजनैतिक दलों व भावी सरकार के सामने लोगों की अहम् मांगों को एक बार फिर रखें.

The Himalaya Collective

The Himalaya Collective is as an open-source platform for individuals and organisations living and working in the Western Himalayan regions of Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The collective emerged out of deliberations of the Western Himalayan Vikalp Sangam in 2019.
