Flyovers are no solution to traffic problems. They not only fail to reduce congestion but in fact help to increase it. This is based on empirical evidence from many cities around the world that have now begun to demolish elevated roads/flyovers and opt for sustainable solutions like better public transport and Non Motorised Transport (cycling and walking).
However, our cities including Pune are continuing to follow the outdated path of building flyovers with predictable results – of worsening congestion, pollution and destruction of the city’s natural and built environment.
Shivajinagar:Netaji Subhashchandra Bose Chowk (Sancheti Hospital) Junction.
Pune Municipal Corporation built a three story high Flyover here but the congestion at this junction has not reduced. Rows of vehicles stuck in traffic jams on this flyover has become a norm. Flyover is not a solution to congestion. This once again underlines the need to reduce the number of personal vehicles on our roads.
