Dear Friend,

Soul-fi to you!

We believe this email finds you hail and hearty. The past one year has been reflective and challenging both. In a world that is consumed by algorithms, hashtags, and followers, the need for human connection was deeply missed. We at Contact Improvisation India and Swaraj University took the previous year as a year of contemplation and pause, and it was at this time that we gave birth to a special program called, “Art of Improvisation Residency”. We are writing to you so that we can share and offer this unique program on the exploration of the self & the connection with the others & environment. We invite you to hop on to the colorful bandwagon of new systems of powerful conversation and creative action.

Through the tools inspired by movement improvisation forms, Contact Improvisation, Butoh, Body-Mind Centering, Axis Syllabus, and others, we will immerse ourselves in the space of releasing the body and mind into the flow of movement.

The improvised movement practices allow us to be in ease with ourselves, breathe, and turn our curiosity into the never-ending possibility of moving and living in this current world. The residency is designed for those who look for a flexible space to collaborate with others as well as grow their own creative practices and contemplation of the self within the environment of a present given moment.

The residency is dedicated to research different tools for movement improvisation to ground our own practice and to find inspiration for sharing the art of improvisation with others.

It’s time to return to the body, bring the awareness to senses and attention to the embodied perception of the self.

The sessions run for four day from 2nd to 5th April (Friday to Monday). Every day we will spend 6 hours in the studio/ in nature with breaks in between.

The Residency is organized in the spirit of gift culture. We feel everyone is a teacher, a co-creator with many gifts to share to help build the larger community. The suggested contribution for this is based on a sliding scale of Rs.6000 to 10000 inclusive of the food, stay and facilitation. You can contribute from your heart. We would greatly appreciate it, if you can give more to sponsor others’ participation. Lack of money should not deter anyone from attending or from full participation. Please feel free to contact us if  money is the constraint to participate.

About the Facilitators:

Adrianna contemplates on movement through dance and her vagabond lifestyle. She incorporates poetry, movement, visual arts, and philosophy to feed her curiosity about cognition, attention, collective understanding, and other aspects of living and interacting between the internal and external worlds. Currently associated with Contact Improv India community, she continues to discover what it means to share the art of improvisation with people from very different backgrounds.

Guru graduated from The Government College of Fine Arts in Chennai and then continued to receive a Master’s degree in Philosophy of Yoga. Ten years ago, he moved on into practicing Contact Improvisation and hasn’t stopped since.

Years of study in various somatic and artistic teachings have taught Guru to be open and flexible in joining traditional systems of practice and other different methodologies. Guru has been dedicated to sharing his experience and knowledge of CI by teaching internationally (including festivals in Thailand, Moldova, Canada) and throughout India. Together with other first Indian practitioners of CI, he founded Contact Improv India (CII) – an organization that focuses on spreading Contact Improvisation around India, making it accessible to everybody, and researching into merging different forms of creative expression.

Harsh was a khoji at Swaraj university. He has been working with Shikshantar Andolan,Udaipur as he thinks the modern education system is destroying the culture. For the last four years one of the most important explorations for him has been around body wisdom and its intelligence through different mediums like clowning, Interplay. He is also practicing Contact improvisation, a dance form and shares that from the last three years. From the past two years he has been very inclined towards Shamanism and learning rituals for healing and other similar practices. Hari Choudhary
Discovering about Contact Improvisation six years ago by chance, Hari has found the form to be very powerful as an awareness practice that effortlessly enables one to get in touch with themselves, connect with others and explore being and moving in the most fun and authentic way.

“As children, connection, playfulness and spontaneity came naturally to us.” At the moment, Hari is interested in re-exploring these qualities and co-creating a space that offers listening and conversing with our bodies and presence and not just words.

About the host and Venue:

SwarajUniversity was born in 2010 as a two year learning programme for youth. The focus of the programme is on self-designed learning and on green entrepreneurship, including exploration of basic business skills within the context of ecological sustainability and social justice.

This self-directed learning process invites learners to identify their hearts’ visions and engages them in developing the skills, relationships and practices they need to manifest those visions.

The programme is as much about developing the capacities and confidence we need to create and pursue our unique learning paths as it is about strengthening the leadership capacity and right livelihood opportunities in communities.

There is NO degree or certificate required to join Swaraj University, and we do not give any degrees after the course. We are proud of being totally unrecognized and un-deemed, since we believe in creating portfolios based on one’s own experiences rather than degrees and certificates as a proof of one’s education. We are also part of the campaign, Healing Ourselves from Diploma Disease, a national campaign to say NO to degrees and certificates and promote a better evaluation framework such as that which is based on experience and  portfolios.

Tapovan Ashram is a beautiful, tranquil, green, 15 acre campus located in an isolated,  scenic valley between two mountain ranges, 15 kms from Udaipur city in the western Indian state of Rajasthan.

The Ashram has an organic farm, herb gardens and an ayurvedic healing centre. Away from the noise and pollution of city life, it offers a serene and beautiful environment for reflection, self-exploration and healing.  There are a lot of opportunities for nature and wild-life lovers for walks and trails, and for some bird-watching or snake spotting.  One gets to witness a variety of flora and fauna thriving in the hills surrounding the Ashram, including foxes, hyenas, and leopards.
