On about 40% of the Earth, rainfall is unpredictable. Agriculture based on regular rainfall becomes unsustainable under the changing circumstances of global climate change.

But the same, highly variable natural environments offer opportunities for food production when the food producers specialize in being in the right place at the right time. Pastoralists are such producers. They specialize in making sustainable use of highly variable environments to produce food. They manage grazing itineraries to match changing opportunities in their landscape.

Pastoralists are already in the future.
